Huawei Unveils the Mighty Mate X5

Huawei has just announced their latest foldable smartphone, the Mate X5. This device looks to push the boundaries of what’s possible with folding display technology.

The Mate X5 has a massive 7.8-inch foldable OLED display with a resolution of 2224×2496 pixels. This gives you an expansive canvas to view content whether the phone is folded or unfolded. The main display also has an impressive 120Hz refresh rate for smoother scrolling and animations. When folded, there is a 6.4-inch cover display on the outside with its own 1080p resolution.

Under the hood, the Mate X5 is powered by Huawei’s powerful Kirin 9000S chipset built on TSMC’s 7nm process. It comes with up to a massive 16GB of RAM and 1TB of internal storage. This ensures the device can smoothly handle any task you throw at it. Keeping the lights on is a sizable 5060mAh battery with support for speeds up to 66W wired charging and 50W wireless charging.

In the camera department, you get a versatile triple rear camera setup consisting of a main 50MP wide camera, 12MP 5x optical periscope telephoto lens, and a 13MP ultrawide. This allows you to shoot landscapes one moment and zoom in on distant subjects the next. Video recording goes up to 4K 60fps as well.

Other key features include IPX8 water resistance, stylus support on both displays, fast WiFi 6 connectivity, 5G support, NFC and an infrared blaster. The device will come preinstalled with Huawei’s HarmonyOS with EMUI on top in certain markets.

At this point, the Mate X5 appears to be one of the most well-rounded and powerful foldables on the market. With its large displays, powerful internals, versatile cameras and fast charging, it will be interesting to see how it competes against Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip devices. The Mate X5 is certainly an engineering feat that showcases how far folding devices have come.
