When Apple announced the iPhone 8 in late 2017, it was aimed at retaining the familiar design of the iPhone 6/7 models for one more year. But refinements under the hood made the 8 a solid incremental upgrade.
Design and Build
Physically the iPhone 8 was nearly identical to the iPhone 7 with aluminum unibody construction and a 4.7-inch display. Apple’s strongest glass ever coated the front and back for extra durability. IP67 dust/water resistance returned too.
Display and Performance
The same Retina HD LCD from previous iPhones served well, with True Tone retaining natural colors. But the real upgrade came from the new A11 Bionic chip – an immense performance boost over prior iPhones and even most Android flagships of the era.
Camera Upgrade
The single 12MP rear cam captured excellent photos with improved low-light ability and autofocus speeds thanks to Apple’s image processing. 4K video at up to 60fps was also new. Selfies looked quite good for basic usage too.
Charging and Battery Life
An incremental 1821mAh battery proved sufficient for typical all-day usage. Fast charging accelerated up to 50% in 30 minutes. Battery replacement was also now considerably easier than prior iPhones.
While not a major redesign, the iPhone 8 proved itself as an extremely capable smartphone through refined hardware and long-lasting performance courtesy of swift iOS updates. It represented Apple playing it safe another year but delivering an overall very polished experience.
