Motorola’s Unique Concept Phone – The ThinkPhone
Back in 2009, Motorola showed off a unique concept phone called the ThinkPhone that provided a glimpse into where smartphone design could potentially head. While the ThinkPhone was never commercially released, it demonstrated Motorola’s innovation and creativity when it came to pushing the boundaries of mobile tech.
The defining aspect of the ThinkPhone’s design was its emphasis on a wraparound transparent e-ink display that covered the entire front and back of the device. This created an always-on display that could be viewed from any angle. The e-ink technology allowed the screen to consume very little power but still remain visible even in direct sunlight. It gave users more surface area to interact with compared to typical smartphones of the time.
Under the e-ink display lay a flexible electronic paper film that responded to touch inputs. Motorola’s concept was that different apps and interfaces could dynamically change across the whole surface of the device rather than being confined to one side. For example, a music player interface could wrap all the way around while you had the phone in your hand.
Key specs included a paper-thin profile at just 3mm thick, support for gesture controls, and integration with social networks to share content across the display. While packing flagship level components, the always-on e-ink screen was meant to deliver “weeks” of standalone battery life on a single charge.
Unfortunately for gadget lovers, the ThinkPhone remained solely in the concept stage. The tech just wasn’t fully ready for prime time back in 2009. E-ink and flexible displays have advanced significantly since then but still can’t match the performance of LCD/OLED screens. It’s a fascinating look at how Motorola envisioned bending some of the constraints of traditional smartphone design. Nearly 15 years later, aspects of the ThinkPhone concept may start to feel less like science fiction as technologies continue progressing.
The Motorola ThinkPhone showed that Big Blue was willing to imagine radical form factors well before they were feasible. While it didn’t make it to market, it demonstrated Motorola’s innovative spirit and helps provide a preview of where mobile interaction could be headed.
