Samsung recently unveiled its latest foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Z Flip5. As the direct successor to the popular Z Flip4, the Z Flip5 retains the classic flip phone form factor but introduces several improvements and new features.
Design and Display
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 has an updated yet familiar clamshell design that allows it to fold in half for easy pocketability. Its outward folding design keeps the internal display protected when closed. It has several sleek color options like Mint, Graphite, and Lavender.
Unfolded, it has a large and vibrant 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 1080p resolution. The main screen gets up to 1750 nits of peak brightness making it vivid outdoors. It also has Samsung’s durable Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection.
On the cover is a smaller 3.4-inch Super AMOLED screen that can show notifications and content without opening the phone. Both screens now have Samsung’s toughest Armor Aluminum frames claimed to offer better drop and scratch resistance.
Hardware and Performance
Powering the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset with 8GB of RAM for smooth multitasking. It comes in 256GB and 512GB storage variants without a microSD card slot.
In my usage, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 felt fast and responsive while switching between apps and viewing content. Graphically intensive games also ran smoothly at high settings. Benchmark scores were on par with other flagships powered by the same chip.
Camera
The dual rear camera system includes a 12MP main sensor and 12MP ultra-wide. Both capture detailed photos in good lighting. Low-light shots had some noise but HDR processing helped retain details.
Selfies were taken using the 10MP inner camera. Video recording goes up to 4K at 60fps from both cameras. Overall the cameras are capable but not the best in their class.
Battery Life
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 packs a 3700mAh battery which lasts a full day with moderate usage. Heavy users may have to charge before the day ends. It supports 25W wired and 15W wireless charging, taking around an hour to fully charge.
Early Verdict
Priced at $449, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 seems like an incremental upgrade over its predecessor bringing better hardware and a refined design. Its compact flip form factor remains unique in the smartphone market. But competition is catching up in terms of multi-day battery life and camera performance. Still, it remains a top choice for those who want an all-screen foldable experience in a pocketable clamshell design.
